Trading Jesus

What's your dream? Your biggest life goal? Do you want to be successful? Do you want to be in the best possible physical shape? Do you want the highest position in your company-stopping at nothing along the ladder to the top? Would you love to be an Olympian? What motivates you, or possibly keeps you at up night? Do you have big plans and big aspirations for something specific in your future? Are you dedicated to making it happen each day of your life? Dreams are good. Aspirations are good. Goals are good. We should all have something we aspire for-we shouldn't stay stuck and become stagnant. But we need to be careful.
Nearly half of all Americans classify themselves as workaholics. A workaholic is defined as someone who compulsively works long and hard hours. This person will work in place of needed sleep. They turn down social invitations in order to work beyond normal work hours. Some workaholics work because they enjoy their work, and others work because they feel compelled to work. Whatever the case may be, work is their priority.
Athletes training for the Olympics will train on average, around 30 hours per week. This is only the physical part of their training-you must also take into account the focus put on calories and nutrition, as well as rest and recovery. The goal is a gold medal, and few will make it to the top. While my son didn't pursue Olympic aspirations, he did spend a large amount of time in high school swimming, training, swimming some more, and eating to optimize performance. Sports on any level require commitment in order to do well, and eat up large amounts of time. Being an Olympian isn't a bad life goal, but as with any other goal, it shouldn't be at the top of the list for a Christian.
All of us wrestle with goals and dreams that vie for first place in our hearts. We may want to be rich and afford the things we wish for. We may want that big house on the lake and a nice boat to cruise around in. We may want the latest Tesla, with all the bells and whistles. We may want fame and wish our name was known across the world. We may aim for being President of the United States. We may spend hours and hours in the gym to have the perfect body. Whatever our dreams are, they should be secondary at best, to our love and devotion for Jesus Christ. And sadly, it's not the case if we were to be completely honest.
Trading Jesus doesn't mean we would totally give Him up for something we are going after-it's as simple as allowing them to have more of our hearts than we give Him. It's an attitude of "I want ____, and I'm going after it with all of my being." We often spend most of our life chasing our dreams, and give the leftovers to God. In short, we are trading Him for the worldly desires of our hearts, disillusioned by the glitter of temporary satisfaction, in place of eternal reward. We are selling ourselves short for the present world we live in, in exchange for doing great things for our future in heaven.
Whatever it is you're shooting for, put it in its proper perspective. Giving Jesus anything less than our first priority is essentially trading Him off for something of far less value. He deserves our primary place of service and devotion. He says in Matthew chapter 10 that if we love anyone more than we love Him, we aren't worthy of being His. The principle here is He has the place of preeminence in our lives. If we put the same energy we put into our life goals as we do in serving Him, what difference could we make for eternity? I'll be the first to admit that I'm often crowding out His place of priority and replacing it with things that will only satisfy in this temporary world. I can do better-how about you?

But seek FIRST the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you (Matthew 6:33, ESV).
For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also (Luke 12:34, ESV).
"No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money (Matthew 6:24, ESV).
Set your mind on things that are above, not on things that are on the earth (Colossians 3:2, ESV).

Dear heavenly Father, may we repent of anything we place ahead of our love and service to You. May we realize the sacrifice made for us to be called Your children, and may we store up treasures in heaven-not exchanging them for temporary applause and gratification. In Your name we pray, Amen!

Who's Your #1?

I remember the good old days- the days when my son thought I hung the moon. "Mom, I'm gonna marry you when I get big", he'd say. Other nights, when I would tuck him in his bed, he would whisper "goodnight, mom. You're my favorite person in the whole world." That was before he grew up, and before Delanie. That's life in a child's world, where mom and dad held that number one place in the life of their little one. It's not that my son doesn't love me now, but he realized as he grew up that I'm just "mom", and I 'll never take the place of Who should be first in life. And he also realized he sure doesn't want to marry me, thank goodness!
But his naive misplaced view of me is a great picture of how we place value on relationships. Often, we get it wrong and we place the priority of our hearts on someone here. We love others more than we love God. I've had to question myself on this age old problem- who has the ultimate place of priority in my heart? Is it my kids? Is it my husband? Is it a boyfriend or fiancĂ©? Is it a career or a substance? What gets top place in my affections and in my life? We can get a little turned around in love. We may romanticize loving someone more than anyone or anything. We may think we are loving the very best kind of love, but if we love them more than we love and serve God, we simply aren't.
The truth is, loving God helps us love everyone else so much better. God is love, and through Him, we learn how to love others. Healthy relationships are not based on how a person performs. When we learn to allow God's love for us redefine the way we love others, we free a person from being loved based on their qualifications. We all mess up, and we all make mistakes. If we love others first, we will eventually be let down by them and begin to question if we truly love one another. If we love God first, we will better understand that people are fallible, and can only love with human capacity- faulty at best. Understanding our own shortcomings, and how they don't disqualify us from God's great love for us, helps us pass it on to those we have a love relationship with.
There are many practical ways we can show that we love God first in our habits, attitudes, choices, and behaviors. Making God our top priority will have a cost, and considering what He did for us, any cost on our part is a privilege. Putting aside time for church, studying His Word, and spending time with Him are all ways we can express our love. But perhaps one of the best indicators of how well we love Him, will be in how we love others. Selflessly. Graciously. Fiercely. It's a no-strings attached kind of love. A love that has no limit or no exclusions. It's an all-in kind of love, with no exit clause.
So if you really want to love others well- love God first. Kick your spouse or your girlfriend, or children down a notch. By loving God more than you love them, you'll actually love them so much better. And they'll feel it. I know I feel the most secure when my husband loves God more than he loves me. And I love him the best when I allow God to have the priority of my heart. And when you do, His love will shine through you, spilling over into all your other relationships, allowing you to look more like Jesus. In a culture with a distorted view of love, we are given the opportunity to give fresh light on God's love to a watching world, when we love Him the most.

"You shall no have other gods before me. Exodus 20:3 (ESV)
And he said to him, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. Matthew 22:37-38 (ESV)
But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Matthew 6:33 (ESV)
For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. Luke 12:34 (ESV)

Dear Heavenly Father, I should easily love you more than others, and yet my heart is often not where it should be. I get distracted by earthly love- for my husband, for my kids, and even for this world. I lose sight of all You are, and all You've done, far too often. Help me to remember that by loving You most, I will love others so much better. In Your name, I pray Jesus, Amen!

Where I'm Setting my Mind

I love big, and I love many. My husband, my kids, my family and friends hold my heart in a big way. I love to do things for them- cook their favorite meals, surprise them with something from Target, or send little texts that remind them of my love. I love things too- food (sadly), places (tropical), my Explorer, a good massage (Gayla- you're the best), and a good book. My laptop is awesome, and I'm a big fan of my own bed. I love my house, and I enjoy going out on our boat. But things are always less important than my people.
I put a lot of myself into the people I love. I spend an inordinate amount of time thinking of them, doing things for them, and loving them. And I like to take care of the things I love- keep them safe, clean and enjoy them. I love each person, and to a lesser degree, each thing- but they shouldn't be what I set my affection on. While my marriage was important, it should have taken its proper place after my affection for Jesus Christ.
The world, including me, gets a lot of things backwards. We have a "me first" attitude, and it causes us to live selfishly, instead of selflessly. Healthy marriages aren't built on selfishness. When I put my own wants and needs first, my marriage won't thrive. And even if I put my husbands wants and needs first, while our marriage will be better, it won't be the best it could be. But when I put Jesus in the proper place of priority, our marriage has the best chance of being the best that it can be.
This scripture should be my motto for life: Set your minds on the things that are above, not on things that are on earth. Colossians 3:2 ESV. If I give my Heavenly Father the proper place of authority in my life, all my other relationships will be better- healthier, and more satisfying. When I live and love according to the principles found in scripture, my marriage will benefit. When I look back over the past, I can see where I allowed my priorities to be out of order. While it is natural for a mother to love her kids ahead of herself, if I love the Lord more than them, I will be a better mom. If I love Jesus more than my husband, I will be a better wife. He must be first, and I should be last- loving others more than I love myself. This is the way Jesus lived, and loves. He loved me so much that He gave His life for me. I didn't deserve this love from Him, and yet He chose to give it to me anyway. When I love like Jesus did, every relationship I have will be much better. So I encourage each of you to love Him first, and others next. When you do, you will be amazed at the way it will enrich your relationships, and draw you closer to our precious Savior.

But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Matthew 6:33 ESV
He must increase, but I must decrease." John 3:30 ESV
For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. Romans 8:5 ESV

Dear Heavenly Father, help me to properly prioritize my life, and my relationships. You should always come first, Lord, and yet I often fail to give you the prominence in my life that You deserve. Forgive me for my selfish ways, and help me to live and love like You did. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen!
